"African Butterflies"
This is a collection of butterflies
floating in swarms in the flower garden of
the lodge site, which I found between safari
excursions.
Butterflies seem to gain confidence
when they are in a large group, just like
people. If a butterfly is not with his company,
he always flies away from me. But he appears
not to feel scared of me when he is with
his friends. He stays where he is,even if
I approach him. The camera I used is an automatic
focusing and exposure, made-in-Japan single
lens reflex camera with a 100-400 mm telephoto
lens (a borrowed lens.). In addition, the
sunrays falling on the equinoctial region
were intense. Great conditions for an amateur
photographer. I suppose that the shutter
speed quickened as the focal depth was automatically
increased. Thanks to that, the camera took
shots of butterflies in a natural manner.
In savanna, we cannot stop and
get off a car casually. There are so many
other butterflies whose images I could not
take pictures of. A great variety of butterflies
were seen even in the limited space of the
lodge's flower garden. If we go out
to savanna and riversides or go into forests
after having made necessary preparations
and good researches, I am sure we will be
able to witness the world of numerous beautiful
insects glittering like jewels.

"NO PASSAGE THIS WAY (Coexistence of
Crocodiles
and Hippopotamuses)"
Location : Buffalo Springs National Reserve (Kenya)
At this lodge site, four-meter
crocodiles come up to just under the lodge
windows at night. The Ewaso-Ng'iro River
inlet stretches to the lodge yard.
Crocodile is a good ambush assailant,
capturing animals that come over to the waterside.
He persists with this posture.Perfectly still.
But, the second one of the guests threw a
glass of water at the yard ! The crocodile
jumped to reach the water. What a reaction
speed ! Despite such a great weapon,a crocodile
never attacks a baby hippo. Why ?
"Because he is afraid of revenge."
Having lived in Kenya for twenty-eight
years, Mr.O, an honorary warden(of wildlife
preservation) of Republic of Kenya, provides
a lucid answer. Hippo parents allow no one
to hurt their children. They vent their wrath
to the attacker. If an adult hippo throws
its bulk down, even a crocodile would be
crushed. He would be knocked off, turned
over, and tramped down under the forefeet
of the rampant hippo. That is why crocodiles
never attack hippo babies. Aslong as crocodiles
do not attack their babies, hippos never
attack crocodiles. The law of the wildlife
is very reasonable and stern, isn't it ?

"Single-Mother Family in Savanna"
Location : Near Masaimara National Reserve
(Kenya)
Cheetahs do not gather in packs. They
raise their cubs
individually.
Well known as the savanna's fastest
runner, a cheetah has such a unshakable confidence
in her running speed of 110 km/hr that she
never makes a sneak attack on her prey nor
assaults it in numbers, unlike other carnivorous
animals. As she approaches a prey close enough,
she starts sprinting to capture the fleeing
target. She will not do such nasty acts as
snatching others' food away and foraging
others' leftover. A cheetah hunts her prey
on her own. Noble, proudful aristocrat of
the Wildlife Kingdom!
Targets of cheetah are agile,
too. So she sometimes fails in her favorite
trick of jump-and-catch and has to do with
a small catch like a hare. On such an occasion,
she lets her cubs eat all the food she got,
holding back her hunger. Yes !The savanna's
great hunter is a benevolent mother at home.
For her children, and for her
own survival, she runs in the field of Africa today,
too, chasing her preys.

"King Crouching in the Field"
Location : Near Masaimara National Reserve (Kenya)
Look at his virile, battle-scared
face. Hunting is carried out mainly by a
group of lionesses he leads. I ran into a
just-started hunting. Targeting on a flock
of topis (sheep of large size), a pack of
dozen lions scattered. Some of them go wait
in ambush, others climb up an anthill for
watch and diversionary attack, and still
another gets around the field to chase a
prey. Even without prearrangement, the lions
divide their roles and put the attack
formation brilliantly. But the topi, with
his life at risk, escaped by a hair.
What is admirable about lions,
even if they fail to capture their target,
they do not blame others unlike human beings.
They never say, "Damn! What are you
doing?" or "It's your fault."
If they fail in their operation as a result
of their all-out collaboration, they just
get together and comfort one another by licking
one another's face,as if to say, "Things
are not going well," "I agree."
Then, they lie down on the field, feeling
low for a little.
But, after a while, they recover
their spirits and start moving ahead to get
another prey.

"Lion Family Going Home After Hunting"
Location : Amboseli National Park (Kenya)
The hunting turned out successful.
They seem to have caught a big prey. All
members of the lion family look fully content
with a bellyful feast.
Our safari excursions start in
the darkness of early morning everyday following
the animals' time schedule. Just after we
left our lodge, far beyond the field was
found a pack of lions crowding around their
prey in the darkness. It was unclear in the
darkness, but a hyena seems to have snatched
away a leg of the killed animal.Even if we
want to get closer to the animals, we are
not allowed to deviate from the designated
route in the national parks and reserves
for preservation of the wildlife and the
nature. So, we decided to go ahead and wait
in advance for the lions at a place near
the path the lions would take after they
had finished meal.
Here is a photo I took there.
We waited for a long time. To our annoyance,
they seemed not to want to go straight home
at all, probably because they were so pleased
with the big feast. They were so distant
from the place where we were that they looked
like just sesame seeds even through binoculars.
They swerved to the right, then to the left,
stopped to look back, laid on their stomach
to have a nap, etc. . . . Finally, day broke.
In the morning sunlight, the
happy lion family went home toward their
forest, tripping across a band of safari
vehicles leisurely.

"Face-Off"
Location : Samburu National Reserve (Kenya)
I saw a lion in hunting. What
he is aiming at now is an impala.
Behind the impala is a herd of dozens of
impalas, and behind
bushes over there hide a few lions.
The maximum speed for a lion
is said to be around 60 km/hr at
most.
An impala, on the other hand,
can run at the speed of 80 km/h
without difficulty. In addition, they can
jump over small bushes
easily. A lion can not, so he has to go around
bushes. In this light, lion is no match for
impala. So, lions go hunting in groups. Even
with this strategy, lions succeed in hunting
only 20 % of the time. It is not exactly
the case that herbivorous animals are trembling
in fear of being targeted by lions. Actually,
they fight with lions evenly. In the above
photograph too, at the moment the impala
let out a few sharp yells, a whole herd of
impalas dashed away to leap over bushes at
an astonishing speed. The lions' hunting
failed. Impalas won.
Look at this back shot of the
impala. Don't you feel his strong
spirit, which says to his powerful enemy,
"I won't lose out to you !"

"Always with Mom"
Location : Amboseli National Park (Kenya)
With Africa's highest peak, ice-capped
Kilimanjaro, in the background, a mother-and-calf
pair of elephants is grazing together. In
the distance, another herd of elephant is
moving across the field. This is a "peaceful"
world of wildlife ! In Amboseli, you have
a 120 percentchance of catching sight of
elephants. It is not too much to say that
you can't miss them. But, elephants there
didn't naturally increase their number that
much.
Mr.O, an honorary warden(of wildlife
preservation) of Republic of Kenya,
goes on, "An elephant needs a living
space of at least 2-3-sq.km-wide, which varies
depending on the vegetation of the field. Currently, around
800 elephants live in 392-sq.km-wide Amboseli.Many
of the elephants fled from pastoral farmers
and poacher and finally got here. Amboseli
has become a refugee camp for elephants."
This lovable, earth's biggest animal is under
the human persecution here.
Elephants
Forever !
Someday,
if elephants disappear from the earth, .
. .
Elephants
Forever ! World of Wildlife Forever !
It seems high time for
human beings, as the top of all species,to
use their outstanding wisdom and power to
seek a way to coexist with all living creatures.
